Opportunities and Challenges of Engaging Diasporas in Climate Action

Diasporas are often among the first to respond when a disaster strikes in their countries of heritage, but their potential for contributing to climate action remains underutilized. A newly published multi-country case study, part of IOM’s Diaspora for Climate Action project, highlights best practices and provides recommendations. This case study assesses the opportunities and challenges involved in engaging the United Kingdom-based Bangladeshi, Ghanaian, and Jamaican diaspora communities in climate action in their respective countries of heritage.

The study specifically focuses on the opportunities and challenges related to harnessing the intellectual capacities of the diaspora in managing climate change impacts in their countries of heritage. It involved a broad range of stakeholders, including national and local government entities, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia, and relevant communities in both the countries of heritage and their diasporas.

The findings of the multi-country case study are consolidated in this final report, which presents actionable recommendations on how to effectively leverage diaspora contributions to climate action in their countries of origin. This report will be presented to diaspora and national government stakeholders involved in the Diaspora for Climate Action (D4C) project, as well as other interested stakeholders at the national, regional, and international levels.
