Refugee week 2020: online Q&A session with Emmy award-winning director Waad Al-Kateab

We are approaching Refugee Week a bit differently this year, and we would love you to join us in celebrating the resilience of refugees and host communities all around the world. The stories of their courage can be more than ever a guiding light for many of us during these challenging times. IOM, the UN Migration Agency will host an online Q&A session with Emmy award-winning director of ‘For Sama’, Waad Al-Kateab, moderated by celebrated author and journalist, Zaiba Malik.
Together we can imagine a more welcoming world for refugees; a world that is free from violence and conflict. Together we can make this change happen. Whether big or small, any change begins with simple acts.

We invite you to:

  1. Watch ‘For Sama’. It is free for you to access on the Channel 4 website, here >
  2. Join us for the online Q&A session with director Waad al-Kateab, on 15th June, 7-8 pm, you can register here.

For Sama

FOR SAMA is both an intimate and an epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad Al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rages around her.
Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
The film, by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, has received global recognition, receiving the Prix L'Œil d'or for Best Documentary at Cannes Film Festival, the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, and it was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards.
For Sama is produced by Channel 4 News/ITN Productions for Channel 4 and Frontline PBS.

"Migration is one of the key realities of our time. It cuts across communities, influences priorities, and shapes societies.
To realise the benefits of migration for migrants and host communities alike, our responses must be innovative, collaborative and designed beyond the immediate."
