To mark Anti-Slavery Day 2022, IOM UK is hosting an online panel discussion on the importance of bridging the digital gap to better support adults with lived experience of modern slavery in the UK. The event will take place on Wednesday 19th October, 12.30-13.30 pm

At the moment, the support provided as part of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) system does not include the provision of technology as part of the current standard support package. In a digital first world, where connectivity, mobile phones and laptop enable each of us to communicate, interact and use services, ensuring this access to technology is essential to help adults with lived experience of modern slavery to move towards independent living. Since the provision and use of digital devices can increase the risk of exposure to online harms, for practitioners and policy makers, this also poses numerous ethical challenges.

The discussion will explore the benefits and ethical challenges of providing access to technology to adults with lived experience of modern slavery, drawing on IOM's experience and expertise from supporting survivors through the Skills Training and Reintegration (STAR) project, and the initial findings from an ongoing research project led by the University of Liverpool in partnership with IOM UK and the Trafficking Awareness Raising Alliance (TARA), funded by the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre (Modern Slavery PEC).

The panel will also be joined by a member of the Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre team who will discuss the policy implications of the research.

The link to join the event is at the bottom of the Eventbrite Order Confirmation email that you will receive immediately after you have registered.
