Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, affecting lives and livelihoods worldwide and demanding urgent collective action. Diaspora groups, recognised for their contributions through remittances, investments, philanthropy, and skills transfer, are also among the first responders to disasters in their countries of origin. However, governments have yet to fully harness their potential in driving climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The UK hosts some of the world's largest diaspora communities, and to tap into this potential, IOM UK has launched the Diaspora for Climate Action (D4C) project. This initiative will empower diaspora members to connect with key stakeholders in Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, and Moldova, enhancing coordinated climate action and making a lasting impact on climate-vulnerable populations.

These countries face severe challenges due to climate change, necessitating immediate and effective responses. Funded by the IOM Development Fund, and in collaboration with IOM missions and relevant ministries, D4C will support government efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. This project aims to create a model for other nations to integrate diaspora contributions into national climate policies.

“As a person from Ghana that lives in the diaspora, I believe that it's very essential for me to contribute back to my home. Not just because I have the knowledge and expertise, because it's my home, it's where I see myself, it's where I come from.”

I think that diaspora members are uniquely placed in a position where they have access to institutions, key actors, resources, both in their home countries as well as in their residence countries.”

“As a diaspora climate champion, I can then continue the work that I'm already doing in Bangladesh with the students in charge of our university and also the students from Birmingham City University to look at how cities can be developed and planned to grow sustainably and rural areas.”
